List of 13 films of Coco Martin before ‘Ang Panday’


Rodel Pacheco Nacianceno, 36, who is professionally known as Coco Martin, plays Flavio Batungbakal III in “Ang Panday,” one of the eight entries to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2017. The film also marks his debut as a director.

Before “Ang Panday,” Martin starred in several notable films. Here are 13 of them:


1. “Luv Text” [2001]

This is Martin’s first film ever. In this drama-comedy fantasy starring Judy Ann Santos, Wowie De Guzman and Carlo Muñoz, Martin played a bit role, the friend of German-Filipino actor Russell C. Mon’s character.


2. “Ang Agimat: Anting-Anting Ni Lolo” ("The Amulet: Grandfather's Charm") [2002]

This is Martin’s second film. He played a bit role in this MMFF film starring Ramon Revilla Sr., Bong Revilla and Jolo Revilla.


3. “Masahista” ("The Masseur") [2005]

Directed by Brillante Mendoza, this marks Martin's first lead role in a movie, which earned him his first acting nomination and award. This sexy dramatic movie was screened at Locarno International Film Festival 2005, Brisbane International Film Festival 2006, Jeonju Film Festival 2006 and Torino International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival 2006. 


4. “Kaleldo” (Summer Heat) [2006]

Martin played a bit role in this dramatic movie. Also directed by Mendoza, it won awards at Jeonju Film Festival 2007 and Durban International Film Festival. 


5. “Tirador” (Slingshot) [2007]

Martin played one of the lead roles in this dramatic film screened at Marrakech International Film Festival 2007, Singapore International Film Festival 2008, Asian Film Awards 2008, Berlin International Film Festival 2008 and Granada Film Festival Cines del Sur 2008. It was the third time Martin starred in a film directed by Mendoza.


6. “Batanes” (2007)

Among the eight films that starred Martin in 2007, this is the last one to be screened. He played a supporting role in this romantic drama starring "Echo" star Iza Calzado and Ken Zhu, who played Xi Men in the Taiwanese TV series "Meteor Garden."


7. “Serbis” ("Service") [2008]

Reuniting with Mendoza, Martin played one of the lead roles in this drama film, which was nominated in the Palme d'Or category at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. The film was also recognized at Bangkok International Film Festival 2008, Pacific Meridian International Film Festival of Asia Pacific Countries 2008 and Asian Film Awards 2009. 


8. “Jay” [2008]

Written and directed by the late Francis Xavier Pasion, this is one of the internationally acclaimed films with Martin in the cast. Also starring Baron Geisler, this comedy-drama crime film was recognized at Bangkok International Film Festival 2008, Black Movie Film Festival 2009 and Mexico City International Contemporary Film Festival 2009. 

9. “Kinatay” ("Butchered") [2009]

Martin and Mendoza returned to the Cannes Film Festival with this crime drama. Written by Armando Lao, this film made Mendoza the first, and still the only, Filipino filmmaker to win the Cannes Film Festival Best Director award. 


10. “Biyaheng Lupa" ("Soliloquy") [2009]

Written and directed by Lao, this drama film reunited Martin with his previous co-actors. Among them were Jaclyn Jose, Julio Diaz, Mercedes Cabral and Allan Paule.


11. “Noy” (2010)

This independent film was the entry of the Philippines for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards. Among Martin's co-actors were Geisler, Joem Bascon, Erich Gonzales, Cherry Pie Picache, Kristoffer King, Neil Ryan Sese, Jhong Hilario and Vice Ganda.


12. "Captive” [2012]

Directed by Mendoza, this drama thriller about the 2001 Dos Palmas kidnappings in the Philippines was recognized at Berlin International Film Festival 2012 and Ghet International Film Festival 2012. Among Martin's co-stars were Cabral, King, Sese, Maria Isabel Lopez, Angel Aquino, Sid Lucero, Mon Confiado, Rustica Carpio, Katherine Mulville and Academy Award-nominated French actress Isabelle Huppert. 


13. “Padre de Familia” ("Head of the Household") [2016] 

In this independent film directed by Adolfo Alix Jr., Martin played a Filipino taxi driver in Malaysia. Also in the cast were Bascon, Geisler and Nora Aunor.
