List of first 13 NBA Most Valuable Players

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is annually giving the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award to the best performing playing of the regular season. Here are the first 13 basketball stars to receive this recognition:

Bob Pettit, Maurice Podoloff

1. Bob Pettit was the first NBA player to receive the MVP award as a forward for the St. Louis Hawks in the 1955-56 season. He received the award again at the end of the 1958-59 season.

Murray Olderman, Bob Cousy, Maurice Podoloff

2.  Bob Cousy was a guard for the Boston Celtics when he received the second MVP award for the 1956-57 NBA season. He never received the award again until his retirement in 1963. 

Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, Tom Heinsohn

3. Bill Russell was a center for the Boston Celtics when he became the NBA's MVP of the 1957-58, 1960-61, 1961-62, 1962-63 and 1964-65 seasons. He tied with Michael Jordan as the second NBA player with the most MVP awards. 


Wilt Chamberlain

4. Wilt Chamberlain was a center for the Philadelphia Warriors when he won the MVP award for the 1959-60 NBA seasons. He won the award again for the 1965-66, 1966-67 and 1967-68 seasons. 


Oscar Robertson

5. Oscar Robertson was a guard for the Cincinnati Royals when he was the NBA's MVP for the 1963-64 season. It was his only MVP award. 


Wes Unseld

6. Wes Unseld won his only NBA MVP award at the end of the 1968-69 season. He was a center and forward for the Baltimore Bullets. 


Walter Kennedy, Willis Reed

7. Willis Reed was the MVP of the 1969-70 NBA season. He was a center for the New York Knicks.




Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

8. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, formerly known as Lew Alcindor, holds the record of the NBA player with the most MVP awards. A center for the Milwaukee Bucks, he won the award in the 1970-71, 1971-72, 1973-74, 1975-76, 1976-77 and 1979-80 seasons.  



Tommy Heinsohn, Dave Cowens 

9. Dave Cowens won the MVP award in the 1972-73 NBA season. He was a center for the Boston Celtics.




Bob McAdoo

10. Bob McAdoo was the MVP of the 1974-75 NBA season. He was a forward and center for the Buffalo Braves.




Bill Walton, Jack Ramsay

11. Bill Walton was the MVP of the 1977-78 NBA season. He was a center for the Portland Blazers. 



Moses Malone

12. Moses Malone was the MVP of the 1978-79, 1981-82 and 1982-83 NBA seasons. He was a center for the Houston Rockets from 1976 to 1986 and for the Philadelphia 76ers from 1982 to 1986.



Larry Bird

13. Larry Bird won the MVP award in the 1983-84, 1984-85 and 1985-86 NBA seasons. He was a forward for the Boston Celtics.
